Your skin health could be related to your diet or your nutrient intake. The right diet could be the cure for cystic acne and for less severe cases, too. Eating the right foods could help prevent wrinkles. Eating the wrong ones could lead to premature skin aging; looking older than you actually are. Basically, researchers continue to tell us that we are what we eat.

One thing that might come as a surprise is that milk intake could play a role in acne. The old notion that chocolate was the “cause” is not supported by scientific studies. But, if we are talking about “milk” chocolate, chocolate milk shakes or chocolate instant breakfast drinks that are mixed with milk, that’s a different story.

At least three scientific studies have found that there is a connection between acne and consumption of partially skimmed milk, instant breakfast drink, sherbet, cottage cheese and other dairy products. If you avoid dairy products, you’ll need to get your calcium and vitamin D from other sources. But, that’s actually easier to do than you might think.

The researchers are not sure why there is a connection between dairy consumption and acne, but they theorize that it could be because cow’s milk contains hormones, including the sex hormones and bovine insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Hormones have long been blamed for the inflammation in the sebaceous glands and hair follicles that cause pimples and the deeper cysts.

Researchers have studied the dietary habits of South American natives and Pacific Islanders, because those populations have no acne, whereas in the more modernized societies, about 90% of all teenagers develop it. The populations studied consumed no cow’s milk or dairy products, but they don’t eat junk food, either.

There will always be varying opinions, but the latest research points to diets high in simple carbohydrates as the cause of acne and a variety of other health problems. Simple carbohydrates are digested too quickly, causing a rise in blood sugar and insulin levels.

As insulin production increases, there is increased production of IGF-1, which is known to cause changes in the sebaceous gland and hair follicle, while causing over-production of skin cells, which are what clogs the follicles, causing blackheads, whiteheads and pimples.

Simple carbohydrates include white bread, white rice, pasta, white potatoes and white sugar. Baked goods and most junk foods will make the list.

As time goes by, people that continue to eat a diet high in refined grains and other simple carbohydrates have an increased risk for type II diabetes. Accelerated aging and wrinkles may also be seen. There are other factors important to good skin health and a reduced risk of cystic acne, but failure to look at your diet could make those other things less effective
